This sunset at Marine Park was so beautiful! I love how the setting sun is casting rays into the clouds and how it falls to define the layers of trees and mountains on the horizon, and I think it translates fairly well for the assignment. I used the photo app on iPhone to translate this one to black and white, tweaking settings like saturation, contrast, sharpness, gradient, and finally putting it through the monocolor filter once I was satisfied with the exaggerations I made with the color version. 

Originally, I picked a sunset photo that was mostly water, but then I decided that the composition was unbalanced. This choice is much more visually stimulating with the clouds and the 50/50 split between the water and the rest of the scene.

Alas, I couldn't pick just one photo, because I really liked how this other one came out! I still haven't gotten the hang of getting things in focus consistently, so I should probably revisit the earlier chapters and get the camera professionally cleaned (there is dust inside where I can't reach to clean). I barely made any adjustments here, but I did adjust for sharpness and a few other things. I used the mac photo app to tweak this one.

 This week, we focused on capturing images of animals in our neighborhood while reflecting on the types of wildlife that inhabit the area. Observing and photographing these creatures provided a fascinating insight into their behaviors and movements, making me appreciate the subtle beauty of local wildlife.  One of my favorite moments was photographing an owl, a shot from a previous quarter that I was particularly proud of. I managed to capture the bird’s full wingspan in Cornwall Park with a synchronous series of about five images, showcasing the power and grace of its flight.  Nature is all around us! A camera is an incredible tool that not only captures what we see, but helps us to see more. When we pick up a camera we find ourselves on the spectrum between art and science. While our cameras objectively capture light, we decide where to point them and why. If a picture is worth a thousand words then an image can make valuable contribute to our understanding of an organism, inspire people to action, or make  someone smile. Nature in my Neighborhood — Contessa

As a resident of Edens Hall on WWU’s north campus, I have had the privilege of calling the Sehome Hill Arboretum my backyard. I have lived in Edens since September of 2024, and while I was drawn in by the majestic architecture, I stayed for the community and access to the forest. I’m very lucky to have such a beautiful escape behind my building. When I’m itching for the arboretum but don’t have time for an adventure, just down the hallway from my room, I can find a beautiful arboretum view from an atrium lounge for chilly days and a courtyard for warmer ones. I often journey into the arboretum with my friends and by myself, even in the winter when blessed with the perfect combination of unscheduled hours during daylight and unusually sunny weather. I love to travel back and forth to Fairhaven College along the Huntoon Trail and North Reservoir Trail, and on special occasions, I watch the stars and northern lights from the Observation Tower.
