For this photoshoot, I decided to capture a group of trees growing directly outside my apartment so it was easy to shoot throughout the day. I started taking the photos quite late, around 1 pm, so I was anticipating having to shoot in darker conditions considering how fast the light fades during the winter months. For the past few weeks, as the temperatures have been colder, I have noticed that the grass and smaller plants around my apartment remain frosted over for the majority of the day. I was especially noticing the crunchy solid texture of the grass today as I was taking photos, and it made me think about the different survival mechanisms individual plants have to maintain themselves in colder weather. I enjoyed taking photos of the trees in particular because of the mixture of greenery and barren branches, which reminded me of the earth's ability to slow down and rest during the cold. For my last photo, around 9pm, it was entirely dark outside, and I was struggling to get a clear photo of the trees since I had not shot any photos in complete darkness using this camera before. I ended up using a very low shutter speed to allow as much light in as possible and a high ISO, which did cause the image to be less clear. I also struggled taking photos in such bright light, especially since the sky was very clear today, and it was difficult to avoid washing out the image while also capturing the color and texture of the trees. I think the contrast of the dark trees against the sky, as well as the angle I was shooting at, made this more difficult. I would have usually preferred to shoot at a more direct angle, but I wanted to capture the trees without buildings in the image as well. Overall, I enjoyed messing with the settings and practicing taking photos in varying levels of light.
