Both of these photographs were taken at Marine Park in Fairhaven. The first photo, taken along the train tracks, presents a strong sense of symmetry and depth. The railroad serves as a leading line, guiding the viewer’s eye directly toward the distant mountains, the intended focal point. The presence of both the Puget Sound on the right and a freshwater body on the left enhances the image’s environmental complexity. While the composition is structurally strong, the lighting does not fully capture the vibrancy of the sunset. The settings—1/1600, F9.0, ISO 8000—prioritized clarity but resulted in a loss of color depth. A lower ISO and slower shutter speed could have reduced noise and brought out richer tones in the sky. Also, experimenting with a lower perspective might have further emphasized the converging lines of the tracks.
The second photograph, a silhouette of my roommate against the sunset, showcases a more refined execution of settings. Here, the adjustments (1/1000, F4.0, ISO 1600) successfully enhanced the saturation of the sky’s blues and oranges while keeping the subject and railing in complete shadow, creating a striking contrast. This interplay between darkness and light strengthens the composition, making the silhouette stand out crisply against the sky. While the framing is effective, shifting the subject slightly off-center could introduce a more dynamic balance. Also, allowing a bit more foreground detail—such as subtle texture in the railing—might enhance depth without compromising the overall contrast.
