5. Landscape Photoshoot-Erin
I drove over to my friends house in the morning to get these photographs. I live in the valley and cannot access readily a view of the hills. I wanted to get a high up vantage point of the hills and bay. I also chose morning because I've found I prefer the cool and stark lighting of morning to the flat light during the day. It was also a balance of choosing a clear day where the Chuckanut mountains were visible versus a slightly cloudy day for visual interest. Unfortunately I had neither of these things as I chose a clear sky in the hopes of getting a good view of the mountains but did not succeed. However the steam cloud from the factories on the bay seemed to supplement the photographs a little bit. I struggled getting the right exposure and so the foreground in both was very dark and the main focal point is far in the distance. I'm going to keep trying to get good landscape photographs because I've found this to be the most difficult assignment thus far. I struggle with composition in these pictures. The bottom photograph follows the rule of thirds whereas the top one has the main focal point in the middle, making it compositionally boring. I do however love the way the tree adds interest to both. I love the way the tree breaks up the transition from foreground to background and breaks up the light a bit. This adds visual interest. My hope is to try to continue to take landscape photographs outside of the city and to experiment with different times of day. I enjoyed this assignment because it made me get out of bed early and had me think more thoughtfully about the landscape of the city I live in.
